Popular summer activities at Sunday River include Zipline Tours and scenic Chondola rides

Newry, ME (Summer 2011)—Sunday River Resort is offering scenic Chondola rides and Zipline Tours all summer, starting Friday, June 24. As many guests to the resort will tell you, both modes of transportation are as uplifting as they are fun!

The Chondola combines eye-catching summer and fall views with a fun and family friendly activity. Featured in Yankee Magazine as a great way to take in the colors of fall that surround the Bethel area in September and October, the Chondola provides guests of all ages with access to the top of the resort’s North Peak, not to mention breathtaking views. Zipline Tours offer “all thrill, no skill” rides under tree canopies along the resort’s trail network and are a great option for sightseeing within the resort’s lush wooded forest.

“Summer is a great time to visit Sunday River because it provides a completely different perspective than in the winter,” Dana Bullen, Resort President for Sunday River, says. “Scenic Chondola rides are a great activity for all ages, while our Zipline Tours offer a fun and thrilling ride for just about anyone.”

Installed in 2008, the $7.2 million dollar hybrid Chondola is comprised of six-person chairs and eight-person gondola cabins. Guests have their choice of riding up in either cabins or on chairs and can choose to either hike back down on one of the resort’s designated hiking trails, or ride a gondola cabin back to the base area.

The Chondola stretches 5,994 feet from the base of the resort’s South Ridge Lodge to its mountaintop Peak Lodge. There, guests can take in views of the Mahoosuc Mountain Range and Sunday River Valley through the resort’s observation deck, or relax with a variety of refreshments available for sale at the Peak Lodge.

Part of the resort’s summer opening day activities, scenic Chondola rides will be available starting on Friday, June 24, through October 10—Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Zipline Tours were installed during the summer of 2010 and are also available all summer. Zipline Tours features a series of six lines ranging from 100 to 300 feet in length to take you flying through the woods and over a ravine and stream bed at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. The wooded course is hidden between South Ridge and Spruce Peak and for a final leg, the tour will take guests over to the Twin Zips finish area where “zippers” soar over the Sundance Trail just outside the South Ridge Base Lodge.

Tickets for all activities are available out of Sunday River Sports.
