Newry, Maine (Summer 2011) – Ranked as the No. 1 public course in Maine by Golfweek magazine, the Sunday River Golf Club has quickly become a must-play course among New England’s finest. In addition to the Golfweek ranking, the Sunday River Golf Club was recently added to GOLF Magazine’s list of top 100 courses you can play in the country.
One of the most scenic courses in New England, Sunday River is spread across a wide hillside on the edge of the Sunday River Valley and offers sweeping vistas across the valley floor toward the Mahoosuc Mountain Range. Those who visit the course are met first with a uniquely dramatic setting. Prior to its construction, world-renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. said the course would strike “a balance between challenge and playability,” and has since called it “one of the most outstanding courses we have had the opportunity to develop.” The mountain course has 18 self-contained fairways that are among the widest in Maine.
Sunday River plays to more than 7,100 yards from the championship tees and just over 5,000 yards from the forward tees with two additional sets of tees in between to suit golfers of all abilities. The facility includes a driving range with multiple target greens and an expansive practice green, all with spectacular mountain views. The 10,000 square-foot clubhouse is fashioned from log and stone and features a deck overlooking the course, a grill serving lunch, and a complete pro shop stocked with equipment and apparel.
“For a long time, Sugarloaf has been regarded as one of New England’s mountain golf jewels,” Greg Perry, Sunday River Golf Club’s Director of Golf, says. “Sunday River Golf Club brings yet another world-class course to Maine—one that’s getting rave reviews literally all over North America and further establishing western Maine as a must-play golf destination.”
The resort offers special lodging rates at the Grand Summit and Jordan Grand Resort Hotels for anyone playing the Sunday River Golf Club. Rates and information are available at www.sundayriver.com or by calling (800) 543-2754.
