Social Media: Newry, Maine (October 5, 2010)—There’s still time to make plans to join the 11th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship (NAWCC) this Saturday, October 9, at the annual Fall Festival Weekend at Sunday River Ski Resort. The NAWCC marks couples’ last chance to qualify for the World Wife Carrying Championship in Finland, held in July 2011, and touts a prize list including the wife’s weight in beer, five times her weight in cash, and serious bragging rights.
“Our annual North American Wife Carrying Championship attracts competitors and spectators from all over the county,” Sunday River’s Resort President, Dana Bullen, says. “For the resort, this weekend is an opportunity to celebrate the end of summer and gear up for another winter season ahead.”
Last year, Dave and Lacy Castro from Lewiston, Maine, beat 46 couples from as far away as California with a time of 54.45 seconds.
To date, the Castros and 40 other couples have registered for the NAWCC. Registration for Saturday’s event is still available; interested competitors can download a registration form online or sign up day-of in the Welcome Center of Sunday River’s South Ridge Base Lodge.
Each year, Sunday River’s NAWCC and Fall Festival attracts over 3,000 spectators to the resort. This weekend-long celebration also marks skiers’ and snowboarders’ final opportunity to take advantage of pre-season New England Pass rates before prices go up after Monday, October 11.
