Sunday River's Tough Mountain Challenge This Saturday, July 20
3,000 competitors to find out if they're tough enough to take on 5 kilometers and 15 obstacles
Newry, Maine (July 16, 2013)—The moment of truth for 3,000 competitors will be realized after crossing the finish line at Sunday River Resort’s fourth annual Tough Mountain Challenge kicking off this Saturday at 9 a.m.
“Did I train hard enough?”
- Hurricane Alley – A field of high-powered snowguns set to spray runners from the start.
- The Shredder – A muddy crawl under real barbed wire.
- Sink or Swim – A slippery-when-wet lily pad-like crossing over the resort’s Barker Pond.
- Slip, Slide & Die – An adult take on a classic childhood past time.
Registration for this year’s event sold out in record time. On Saturday, 3,000 competitors will be divided into heats of 125 people leaving every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Following the adult’s Tough Mountain Challenge, Sunday River will host its annual Mini Mountain Challenge for kids ages 6 through 12.
Free for spectators to watch, the event’s start and finish areas are located in the South Ridge base area. Spectators are encouraged to watch anywhere along the sides of the course with the two best obstacle viewing options being the South Ridge base area and the Barker Mountain base area.
An event festival will also take place throughout the day for competitors, their support teams, and spectators, and will include a barbecue, live music by the Pete Kilpatrick Band, and kids’ games.
Tickets for summer activities including Scenic Lift Rides, the Bungee Trampoline, Twin Ziplines, and the new Climbing Wall will also be available to purchase out of the South Ridge Lodge Welcome Center and Sunday River Sports. Activities closed due to the Tough Mountain Challenge event include the Bike Park and Mountain Bike School, Zipline Tours, and Disc Golf.
