Sunday Shiver's Mystery on the Mountain
The first occurrence happened back in the 1960s during a time when Sunday River was still cutting its baby teeth. Groomer extraordinaire, Pete Bumperton (a.k.a. Bump), had been out working his usual night shift and witnessed three snowmakers riding up the mountain to start the graveyard shift. While just a simple usual sighting, what Bump witnessed would later become history. That night would be the last anyone ever laid eyes on those three men. That is, up until now.
For Bump, nothing appeared out of the ordinary that evening except for the weather. The wind was howling unlike anything he had ever heard before which meant that he had to use a winch just to keep the snowcat grounded. The temperature, too, was so severely cold that only the snowmakers and groomers were allowed to work outside. Bump, himself, had put on two pairs of wool socks that evening and carried a third pair in his pocket, just in case, per his wife’s request.
After a long shift of moving snow, Bump finally pulled the snowcat back into the garage ready to make his late-night trek home. His routine never changed – turn off groomer, grab a cup of stale coffee for the road, and say goodbye to the graveyard crew members. It had become so routine over his 20 years of working at Sunday River that he could almost set his watch by it.
On this particular night, however, Bump didn't run into any of the crew members and figured that the cold had kept them home. In fact, there wasn’t another crew member to be found anywhere. Leaving, Bump wasn’t sure if it was the emptiness of the maintenance building, the
bitter cold, or the lingering feeling that something was off, that sent a chill down his spine. It wasn’t until he read the morning paper’s headline the next day that he wished he had paid better attention to his feelings: “Vanished. Mystery on the Mountain. Three Men Missing.”
Fast forward to today. As most already know, The Peak Lodge got a new deck during a particularly warm June this past summer. What most don't know is what they found under the old deck: two skeletons with vintage snow gear loosely hanging from their dusty bones. One skeleton perfectly intact - minus the skull. Only the midsection remained of the second skeleton - no legs, arms, or head could be found anywhere.
Sure enough, investigators concluded that the two skeletons were the remains of two missing snowmakers from 1960. But weren't there three snowmakers missing? Where's the third? And, for that matter, where are the missing body parts from the two snowmakers buried under The Peak deck?
Since unearthing those bones there have been other incidents. Members
of the maintenance crew have reported spotting apparitions and strange lights that seem to vanish and reappear at whim. At the last Full Moon Dinner, staff reported hearing odd noises coming from the kitchen: screams, groans, and whispers that cannot quite be made out. All quite unsettling. And, the occurrences keep getting more and more frequent. Resort Banquet Manager Aaron and most of his staff now refuse to go up to The Peak after sunset. Just yesterday, one of the resort’s night maintenance crew members refused to go up there to see why the lights seemed to be flickering on and off. And now our housekeeper Joanne is missing. With no one willing to work at The Peak Lodge, Sunday River is suffering and rumors are flying. Just what is going on at The Peak?
Resort President, Dana Bullen, has called an emergency task force meeting. It’s all hands on deck to solve this mystery – which is why you've been called upon to aid in this mission.
Do you have what it takes to go on a journey through The Peak Lodge after dark? What about to the location where the snowmakers went missing so long ago? Now you have the chance to help Sunday River solve this mystery and take back the mountain for the 2011/2012 skiing and riding season….before more disappear.
