Swimming

Rivers – secluded swimming holes

The Western Maine Mountainoffer numerous rivers with a wide variety of beautiful secluded swimming holes.  If you’re looking for peace and quite and don’t mind a chilly refreshing dip in the water, then any of Western Maine rivers is where you want to beat the summer heat.  Some popular locations:

Frenchman’s Hole - Located about 8 miles up Sunday River Road after the fork from Skiway Road

The Letter S Pool - Located about 5 miles up Sunday River Road after the fork from Skiway Road

Artists’ Covered Bridge - Located about a mile up Sunday River Road after the fork from Skiway Road

Coos Canyon - 37 Miles - Follow Route 2 East to Rumford, then take Route 17 North for about 13 miles into the small town of Byron where you will see signs for Coos Canyon Campground. The swimming hole is behind the campground

Lake Umbagog - 29 Miles - Follow Route 2 East then turn onto Route 26 North.  Follow for about 23 miles and there is a small beach right next to the marina

Angevine Park

Angevine Park is located on five acres of land 2.2 miles west of Route 2, between the North Road and the Androscoggin River.  The water is usually warm and the sandy beach that surrounds the pond allows for a gradual entry into the water, which makes it perfect place for families with small children to swim.
