Chondola

  • (Chon-doh-lah) – noun. One part chairlift, one part gondola, all parts party in the sky.

On December 20, 2008, Sunday River opened the first Chondola in the Northeastern United States. Built with six-person chairs and eight-person gondola cabins, the Chondola is Sunday River’s newest high-speed lift running from the base of South Ridge to North Peak. What once was a 20-minute trip on two separate lifts is now a single ride coming in at just under seven minutes. Time saved by riding the Chondola comes in handy now that skiers and riders can access six of Sunday River’s eight peaks from the Chondola’s top terminal. The Chondola was part of a $14 million dollar investment at Sunday River, which also included 12-hour skiing and riding on weekends and holidays, plus an extensive investment into the resort’s snowmaking system.
