If the Sox can sign him to a long-term deal before he is eligible for FA, they can do that. I remember they did it with Nomar, and I'm sure they're done it with others since. But if the Sox wait until Papelbon is eligible for FA before offering him a long-term deal, how is that screwing Papelbon? He would be saying "thank you" because the Sox just let him hit the open market, when they could have locked him up a year or two prior for short money. When the Sox locked up Nomar, they got him for something like $4m/yr, maybe $5m, but 2 years after signing that deal, when Nomar would have been a free agent, the going-rate for an All-Star SS was about $8-9m/yr. That means by signing that deal, Nomar left about $4m/yr on the table. And the Sox had him for another 3-4 years at that $4m/yr price tag. Now, you tell me, who most wants the player to hit the market, the player or the ball club?

If you are not eligible for free agency, you are not getting screwed, you are playing by the rules of your union. It's not a very difficult concept to grasp. The NHL has similar, but much more complicated rules. Same for the NFL. And no one cares about the NBA.

Don't follow it as close as you guys, but if I am a player that is considered the best closer in the business, mostly strikeouts and low era, I would be thinking I deserve a better pay check. OK, my contract is not open yet, but vs. other pitchers I would think the Sox should be buttering this boy up pretty good. If they don't, he will walk fast and soon once he is free to do so. 775 K vs what others are making aint what he should be looking for.

Also, great shootout win for the Rangers over the Bruins yesterday to move into that 6th slot in the east. Great race going on in the eastern conference. Playoff money is due Thurs for us.
