With the Kids in Mind
Sunday River Resort offers family-friendly activities all season long
Newry, Maine (Winter 2013/2014)-Spanning eight interconnected mountains, Sunday River Resort provides the perfect winter setting for family fun offering on-slope adventures and events that excite and off-slope activities and programs that are sure to delight.
New! Junior Has A Fit
New this winter, Sunday River joins parent company, Boyne Resorts, in an effort to ensure that kids' equipment is both affordable and grows with them under the program, "Junior Has a Fit." Within this guarantee, parents purchase new/used equipment al a carte or packages of equipment (skis/snowboard, boots, binding) from a list of options and use the equipment that winter. At the end of the season, and after the equipment is returned, families receive a 50 percent credit towards new/used equipment for the following winter.
For on-mountain activities during the day, the Perfect Turn Ski & Snowboard School offers specific clinics for kids that emphasize safety, learning, and plenty of fun. Children are grouped by age and ability with Mogul Munchkins for ages 3 to 6 (skiing only), and Mogul Meisters for ages 7 to 14 (skiing and snowboarding). Programs are available in half-day and full-day sessions.
For the little, little ones, Perfect Turn offers Tiny Turns - a clinic dedicated to those 3-year-olds ready and willing to learn how to ski. Private Clinics are also available for the family that wants to learn and play together.
For those interested in terrain parks, Sunday River boasts six including its newest and biggest terrain park-T72, a 15-acre terrain park trail on North Peak that features a jump line, some rails, and a 500-foot superpipe.
Of course, not everyone is ready for features that advanced. With that in mind, Sunday River offers more snow-made rollers, berms, and fun in its beginner Who-Ville terrain park located in the South Ridge base area.
For kids (or adults) who can't get enough skiing and snowboarding while the sun is out, Sunday River's night skiingallows families to keep going well after the sun sets. Available on Fridays, Saturdays, and select holiday weeks throughout the winter, night skiing includes eight lighted beginner/intermediate trails and one beginner terrain park to play on.
During the day, take to the woods for a two-hour winter Zipline Tour or, just a short drive away you can choose from dog-sledding expeditions and cross-country trails, to horse-drawn sleigh rides and snowmobile tours. Families interested in any of these activities can work with resort hotel concierges or reservation agents to reserve space in advance.
Come night, the South Ridge base area transforms into a vibrant hub of activity that includes a tubing park with lighted runs and a 750-foot long Twin Zipline. A short walk to the nearby Snow Cap Inn unveils a lighted ice-skating rink, complete with music.
Fireworks shows are also planned throughout the season and best viewed from the South Ridge base area. Grab a seat on one of Sunday River's outside Adirondack chairs or head to the deck of the Foggy Goggle with a hot toddy or hot chocolate and take in the added benefit of live music playing most Friday and Saturday nights.
Additional evening entertainment with Sunday River's Black Diamond Entertainment Series is designed with even the littlest kids in mind. Ranging from hypnotists and magicians to illusionists and reptile shows, the Black Diamond Entertainment Series takes place on select evenings throughout the winter and is located in the Grand Summit Hotel. All shows start at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
Last but not least, for something sweet, the Sunday River Sugaring House opens in March just in time for Maine Maple Sunday, and provides an up-close and personal tour of a traditional New England maple syrup sugaring house. Here, guests learn about the process of making syrup while sampling the end product in candy form. Syrup and treats are also available to purchase at Sunday River Sports.
For bigger savings, Sunday River's Children's Festival Week, January 12-16, is dedicated to families with activities including scavenger hunts, live entertainment, movies, and themed ski and snowboard clinics. Best part about Children's Festival Week? Kids can ski, snowboard, rent equipment, learn to ski/snowboard, and stay-all for free when staying overnight with a parent. For more information on family-friendly activities, events, and ski and stay packages visit www.sundayriver.com or call (800) 543-2754.
