Newry, Maine (September 29, 2017)-After several days of record high temperatures in the Western Mountains of Maine, Sunday River Resort jumped at the chance to cool things off with its annual September snowmaking test. The Maine resort typically opens for skiing and snowboarding on or near Halloween, and this morning's low temperatures degrees provided the perfect opportunity to test the resort's snowmaking system in preparation.
Starting at 6 a.m. Sunday River Snowmakers ran 4 snowguns on Sunday River's Lower Downdraft ski trail, located near the top of North Peak, just below the top terminal of the resort's signature Chondola chairlift.
Although the resort has not yet set an official opening date, this test gives Sunday River's snowmakers the go-ahead to crank the system at full capacity-8,100 gallons of water and 60,000 cubic feet of air per minute, producing four acre-feet per hour-at the first sustained cold snap with temperatures between 25-30 degrees overnight.
Sunday River's snowmaking system is the most advanced in the East, with a nearly 2,000 snowguns-including HKD Impulse Tower Guns and Boyne Low-E Fan Guns-covering 90 percent of its groomed terrain.
Part of this year's $4.7 million in capital enhancements includes 17 new automated snowmaking hydrants and 8,000 feet of additional snowmaking pipe on Sunday River's new Bear Paw trail.
"This is us waving the start flag," Dana Bullen, President and General Manager of Sunday River Resort, said. "There's nothing quite like a late September heat wave to make snow people like us all that more ready to cool things off."
