Sunday River Makes First Snow of 2013/14 SeasonOctober 9, 2013
NEWRY, MAINE (October 09, 2013)-- Sunday River Resort tested its snowmaking system this morning by using fan guns stationed in its South Ridge base area. Though the resort does not plan to open for the winter this weekend, this test does give the resort the green light to fire its snowmaking system at full capacity once cold temperatures sustain. "Making snow in October is what we do," Dana Bullen, Resort President and General Manager for Sunday River, says. "We're known for opening early, so we're always ready to start making snow the moment temperatures are right."
Typically, snowmaking requires sustained temperatures between 26-30 degrees overnight. In addition to celebrating the arrival of winter-like temperatures with snowmaking, Sunday River will hold its annual Fall Festival Weekend this weekend, along with deadline events for its New England Pass (October 14, 2013) and its Lowest Price Guarantee on all lodging packages (October 15, 2013). These events and today's snowmaking test allow the resort to further boast this winter's allocation of nearly $1 million to the purchase of 224 new energy efficient HKD SV10 Impulse snowguns.
This investment also moves the resort closer to the goal of doubling its water capacity and pump capability, all while becoming more energy efficient. Known for having the most technically advanced snowmaking system in the East, Sunday River's HKD SV10 Impulse snowguns account for 35 percent of the resort's total arsenal and allows the resort to cover 95 percent of its trail system with snowmaking.
