Newry, Maine (May 28, 2014)-Located in the Western Mountains of Maine, just five miles from the quintessential New England Village of Bethel, sits Sunday River Resort. In the winter months, Sunday River Resort is known as the second largest ski resort in New England with its unsurpassed snowmaking and eight interconnected mountain peaks. Come summer, however, the resort's snowless slopes turn into a hot spot with mountain activities like Mountain Biking, Zipline Tours, and Scenic Lift Rides. And thanks to its busy events calendar, which kicks off with the opening of its Adventure Park on June 26 and keeps the heart rate up with the Tough Mountain Challenge on July 26 on through to Columbus Day Weekend with the 15th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship on October 11, there's plenty to do all summer long.
When it comes to mountains of fun, guests will love the ease of the Sunday River Adventure Pass ($25 ages 13 and older/$22 ages 12 and younger) which includes unlimited all-day access to the resort's Scenic Lift Rides, Twin Ziplines, Bungee Trampoline, Climbing Wall, and Disc Golf course. For guests needing more thrill, the resort's Bike Park is home to over 20 miles of downhill terrain and the newly opened Mountain Bike School is designed to help riders shift their skillset up a level ($59 for a 90-minute clinic). Kona bikes are available to rent separate from any clinic ($80), and the Chondola lift provides uphill support for those riders who intend for gravity to do most of the work (Bike Park tickets are $29 for ages 13 and older/$18 for ages 12 and younger). Thrill-seekers looking for something requiring little skill will love the high-flying two-hour Zipline Tour that takes zippers through the woods, over a waterfall, and across a small ravine ($59 ages 13 and older/$49 for ages 12 and younger), while skill-seekers will find the 18-hole Sunday River Golf Club (207-824-4653) to be an alpine oasis filled with technical delights and even better views.
If Sunday River's Adventure Park serves as the heart of fun in the sun, then the resort's two hotels conveniently act as bookends to this alpine playground with easy access to and from all of the action.
At the resort's entrance sits the Grand Summit Hotel with all of the amenities you would expect from a full-service hotel like a health club, spa, and a heated outdoor pool. The Grand Summit Hotel also boasts the recently opened Camp restaurant (December 2013) that highlights the best in Maine comfort food and décor. Throughout the hotel are 230 well-appointed guest rooms, all of which were recently renovated and range from standard rooms to three-bedroom suites with kitchens.
Located at the other end of the resort's interconnected eight peaks, and just two miles from the award-winning Sunday River Golf Club, sits the Jordan Hotel with its 187 guest rooms that range in size from standard hotel rooms with two queen beds to three-bedroom suites. Here guests can enjoy full-service amenities including a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, spa, and health club, not to mention one of the most spectacular mountain settings at the resort.
In between both hotels and within walking distance to the resort's Adventure Park are hundreds of condominiums with units that range from studios to four bedrooms. All hotel rooms and condominiums are available to rent through Sunday River Resort, sundayriver.com or 800-543-2754.
Open for dinner throughout the summer, Sunday River's Camp restaurant located in the Grand Summit Hotel will feel more like an upscale retreat thanks to an extensive selection of craft beers, signature cocktails, and entrees that include such creations as Meatloaf Sliders served with a Shipyard Double Thumper sauce and Camp Cod-a Marcona almond encrusted Atlantic cod atop sautéed kale, potato gnocchi, roasted red peppers, and butternut squash, served with a toasted almond cream sauce. Make sure and save room for dessert, because Camp's signature S'mores delivers a whoopie pie-style layered graham cracker pound cake with Nutella-chocolate ganache and charred marshmallows.
All of Sunday River's Adventure Park activities are open Thursday through Sunday from 10am until 4pm starting June 26 through Labor Day Weekend (September 1) and from Friday through Sunday from 10am until 4pm from September 5 through Columbus Day Weekend (October 13). The Sunday River Golf Club is separate from the Adventure Park and is open seven days a week (207-824-4653). All Adventure Park activities are based out of the resort's South Ridge Lodge.
