Are you a Master of the Mountain? You'll be put to the test during this event that combines the excitement of downhill skiing with the precision of a timed road rally and enduro challenge—all while raising money to support the youth in the Sunday River region.

During the Master of the Mountain Challenge, participants with advanced to expert skills are asked to ski to a series of checkpoints on Sunday River's slopes. This timed event aims for contestants to ski certain trails at a controlled, yet aggressive pace, and the goal is to come as close to the pre-determined target time without being faster than the posted time. Target times will be posted on the top of each run to help you gauge your pace. Remember: only one winner will be crowned the Master of the Mountain. Do you have what it takes?

About the Challenge

  • There will be two categories: elite and advanced. Each category will consist of eight trails spread out over eight peaks. Checkpoints will be positioned at the start of the designated trail, and at the base of that trail. There will be no timing between segments or the lift rides. The challenge starts in the Barker Base Area a at 9AM, but how you approach this challenge is entirely up to you. Each participant will be chipped so that your timing can be tracked. You will have five hours total to complete the course.

The objective is to come as close to the pre-determined time per trail without being faster than the posted time. However, you won't find out the target time until you reach the top of that trail to start your run. While the pace is likely to be challenging, it is not designed to be reckless. The one trail you can ski as fast as possible (while remaining in control)? The giant slalom course on Race Area, of course!

  • The winners will be selected by tallying how close each participant came to the ideal time without being faster than the posted time, plus the fastest race result from the Giant Slalom course. As in enduro racing, there is a greater penalty for being faster than the ideal time than slower. The goal is to reward precision and skill rather than pure speed.

There will be one overall winner crowned for the Elite and the Advanced Challenges, plus awards for the top three fundraisers. Prizes will also be given for reaching different fundraising thresholds: $500 (1 lift ticket), $1,000 (2 lift tickets) and top fundraiser will get a 2020/2021 Sunday River Season Pass!

The $75 registration fee includes a commemorative patch. $50 lift tickets will be available for non-season passholders. There are suggested fundraising targets listed below. Feel free to put in your own target when registering.
