NEWRY, MAINE (March 28, 2022)—Sunday River Resort prepares to install the new Jordan 8 chair, a new Doppelmayr D-Line 8-person chairlift, one of the most advanced lift designs in the world, starting with the teardown of the Jordan Express lift beginning today. The Jordan 8 is designed to be wind resistant and weatherproof, sporting heated seats and bubble covers in signature Sunday River Red. 

Alongside the construction of the Jordan 8, the Mountain Operations team will be building out a work road to access the summit of Jordan Bowl, which will require a redesign for the Kansas trail. Currently, Kansas is a traversing trail that spans across Jordan, Oz, and Aurora Peaks with rolling terrain. The redesign of the trail will create smoother terrain, consistent grade, and an easier entrance. 

Another project that begins this summer is Sunday River’s annual snowmaking upgrade. This year, the Mountain Operations team will be installing an underground pipe on Spruce Mountain, which will feed into new snowguns across Spruce Peak, with instantaneous water pressure availability. At the end of the pipeline will be a brand-new pump house, housing a booster system. Located just beyond the top of the Chondola lift, this pump house is the first step to doubling snowmaking capacity in Jordan Bowl and beyond. The new snowguns being installed on Spruce Peak this summer will be 25-horsepower, automated, oscillating fan guns. The oscillation allows the snowmaking team to cover more ground more quickly.  

“The snowmaking upgrades we’re making this summer will be a game-changer for the resort,” says Steve Boulanger, Vice President of Mountain Operations at Sunday River. “We’ll be able to get terrain coverage more quickly and efficiently. We are also setting ourselves up for potential terrain expansion in the future, which is exciting.” 

Sunday River has repeatedly invested in its snowmaking capabilities over the years to provide skiers and riders with the most dependable snow in New England. Currently, Sunday River’s on-mountain snowmaking system services 90 percent of the groomed terrain, and includes over 2,000 snow guns, most of which are energy-efficient, 2,200 hydrant stations, and over 80 miles of pipe. The resort’s snowmakers were also recognized as the top in the nation in the HKD I AM A Snowmaker contest in 2016.
