If Your Skis Could Talk

And what to do about it

Why Your Skis Feel Different

You know that feeling when your skis just aren't responding the way they did a few weeks ago? You're not imagining it.

After logging days on the mountain, bases dry out, edges dull, and suddenly those smooth carves on Upper Sunday Punch take more effort than they should. Your skis start to feel chattery. They don't hold like they used to. You find yourself working harder for the same turns.

Here's the thing: skis and boards are tools, and like any tool, they need maintenance. Fresh wax helps bases glide smoothly across the snow. Sharp, properly beveled edges give you that locked-in feeling when you need it. When your gear is dialed, it responds the way you expect. You're not fighting your equipment, you're just skiing.

That's where the South Ridge Tune Shop comes in.

Backed by the Right People

The Right Equipment

Located downstairs from Sunday River Sports at the South Ridge Base Lodge, the tune shop handles everything from quick waxes to full race-level prep. At the center of it all is a Wintersteiger tuning machine, which is the same equipment used for World Cup race tuning. This isn't your buddy's garage setup. It's precise base grinds, consistent edge work, and the kind of attention to detail that makes a real difference on snow.

But equipment is only half the story. The crew running the tune shop spends their winters right here at Sunday River. They know how our snow behaves throughout the season.

When you drop off your gear, they're not just running it through a process. They're tuning based on how and where you ski.

What to Look For

When to Tune

If you're skiing or riding regularly, a tune every 10-15 days on snow keeps things feeling right. Racers might tune more frequently. Weekend warriors might stretch it a bit longer. But here are the signs your gear needs attention:

  • Bases look whitish or dry instead of glossy black
  • Edges feel dull or you're sliding out on hardpack
  • You notice burrs or nicks on your edges
  • You hit something (a rock, rail, or that ice patch that wasn't supposed to be there)
  • Skis or boards feel sluggish or don't glide like they used to

Making it Easy

How it Works

Drop off your skis or board at the tune shop. The crew will assess what's needed, give you a realistic timeline, and get to work. Depending on the service and time of season, most tunes are ready within 24-48 hours. During peak times, plan ahead.

Everything happens right here on-site, steps from the snow. No shipping gear off-mountain, no wondering if it'll be ready for your next trip.

Feel good, ski good

Happy Skis = Happy You

Good tuning doesn't make you a better skier. But it does let you ski the way you're capable of skiing. Your gear works with you instead of against you. Turns feel predictable. Edges hold when you need them. You spend more time enjoying the mountain and less time wondering why your skis feel off.

The South Ridge Tune Shop is located downstairs from Sunday River Sports at the South Ridge Base Lodge. Stop by with questions, drop off your gear, or grab supplies for home maintenance.

Your skis will thank you.
