Mark your calendar for Sunday River's Solar Eclipse Viewing Party! Join us for fun, food, special eclipse glasses, and a whole lot more! But, don't worry, if you miss this party you catch the next one in about 360 years.

On Eclipse day, lifts will spin until 5PM, but are scheduled to close at 3PM to allow for the safe viewing of the Eclipse for all. Lifts will re-open following the eclipse once enough light is present to resume safe operations.

Please keep in mind that eclipse glasses are in limited quantity.

Fun on North Peak

Head over to Maine Mineral & Gem Museum's pop-up at North Peak and talk with the experts!

Grab your crew, hit up the photo booth, and snap some epic shots of you holding a chunk of the moon! Yes, the one casually cruising around Earth from a cool 226,000 miles away.

It's not just a picture; it's your ticket to bragging rights. You held the moon at Sunday River, and that's a story worth telling!

Enter their raffle for the chance to win a heart-shaped muonionalusta meteorite pendant or some other cool swag like Solar System Chalk, glow-in-the-dark stars and planets, heat-activated changing moon mug, a Chelyabinsk meteorite tumbler, and more!

The More the Merrier

How to Join us?

Even if you are not a skier or rider, you can still join in on the fun!

You can purchase tickets to ride the Chondola on-site at South Ridge Lodge. Scenic Lift Tickets will be sold until 2PM, or until capacity is reached. Walking guests may load via the Chondola cabins until 3:20PM, but we highly suggest arriving in South Ridge by 2PM in case of long lines at the lift.

Walking traffic may begin to download on the Chondola starting at 3:45PM. The Chondola powers down at 5PM, so if you are planning to ride the lift back down to the bottom, please load before the last chair at 4:30PM.

Clothing appropriate for the conditions which includes boots with rubber soles is highly recommended.

What to Expect

Just How Cool is it?

The US will witness a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024—the final one until 2044. But here's the exciting part: Sunday River is incredibly close to the path of totality, making it seem like we are right in the middle of the action.

Experiencing a total solar eclipse in the same spot is incredibly uncommon, happening roughly once every 360 years.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

This happens when the Moon moves in front of the Sun, making it look like the Sun disappears for a bit. In some places where this blockage is complete, it gets pretty dark, almost like early morning or evening. If the weather's good, you might even see the Sun's outer part, which is usually too bright to see.

Eye Protection

Eclipse Safety

Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.

Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury (NASA).

Sunday River Eclipse glasses will be available, in limited quantity, to guests.
